Mallory

“It worked.”

That came from me.

It had been two days since I took action and put my plan into place with Nixon. Two days since I allowed him to ravish me on his desk. Two days since he agreed to dinner with me before we would go back to his place.

And now, I was sitting in the back office at the deli and on the phone with Magnolia for the first time since she’d given me her advice.

“I assume you’re talking about Nixon,” she replied. “But what exactly did you do?”

For the next few minutes, I told her all about what I’d done. I told her about the sexy lingerie, the coat, and showing up at Harper Security. I explained how I wanted him to see what it could be like for us if we got a bit more adventurous, since he seemed to respond well to sex. And finally, I shared how it had worked and given me the opening I needed to get him to suggest we get together somewhere other than my house and even convinced him to have dinner with me beforehand.

“I’m so excited for you,” she bubbled. “This is the best news.”

“Yeah, I’m kind of freaking out about it. He’s supposed to be stopping in at the deli today to pick up some lunch and let me know what the plan is for tomorrow. I can’t wait.”

“You have to keep me in the loop,” she ordered. “And I’m so impressed by you. Taking charge and driving around town in lingerie. You had to feel so powerful walking into his office and showing all of that off to him.”

“I did. It was one of the most erotic experiences of my entire life. I think it was the thrill of it, you know? Like, something about knowing I was willing to risk driving there like that for him made it so much more exciting.”

“I’ll have to try that out on Killian sometime,” she responded. “You don’t mind if I steal your secrets, do you?”

I started laughing and insisted, “Not at all.”

Magnolia and I talked for a few more minutes, but when I heard the bell ring out front, I said, “Hey, I’ve got to go. A customer just got here. I hope it’s him.”

“Okay, I’ll talk to you later. Have fun tomorrow.”

“I will. Love you.”

“Love you, too.”

I quickly disconnected the call, tossed my phone down on the desk, and walked out to the front. I was disappointed to see that it wasn’t Nixon.

“Hi,” I greeted the man. “How can I help you?”

“Are you Mallory?” he asked.

Nodding, I said, “That’s me.”

“I’m Anthony. My sister is Ashley.”

I blinked my eyes in surprise. “Oh. Oh, hi. It’s nice to meet you.”

Anthony shot me an unimpressed look. “Yeah, well, unfortunately, we aren’t meeting under very good circumstances,” he noted. “Is your brother around?”

I shook my head, feeling a bit uncomfortable. Clearly, Anthony knew about his sister’s breakup, and he wasn’t happy about it. “No. He’s not here today. Is there a message
